Common Cold Chain Terms Explained

Cold chain shipments pass through several hands: a packer, a courier, a warehouse worker, a receiving clinic or store. Each of them needs to read the same paperwork and mean the same thing by it, which is what this shared vocabulary is for. None of the terms below describe anything exotic. They describe ordinary events and measurements that need one agreed name so a handoff does not get lost in translation.

The list here covers the terms a new shipper runs into first: what gets measured, what gets built, and what gets checked before a lane is trusted with real product. Getting these terms right matters most on a printed shipping label or a phone call during a delay, when there is no time to explain what a word means before acting on it.

Excursion and time out of refrigeration

A temperature excursion is any reading outside a product's labelled range, for any length of time and for any reason. It is a fact about the record, not a verdict on the product. Whether an excursion matters depends on how long it lasted and what the product's own stability data allows, which is a separate question answered later, not by the excursion itself. A new shipper's first instinct is often to treat any excursion as a failed shipment, which is not what the term itself claims.

Time out of refrigeration, usually abbreviated TOR, is the running total of time a product has spent outside its labelled range across its whole life: storage, handling and every leg of transport added together. A product is typically approved against a maximum TOR budget, not against a rule that says every single minute must stay inside range with zero tolerance. A shipment can generate several small excursions that individually look minor but together use up most of that budget before the product even reaches its destination.

Mean kinetic temperature

Mean kinetic temperature, usually shortened to MKT, is a single calculated temperature that represents the cumulative thermal stress of a record that moved up and down over time, rather than a simple average of the highs and lows. A shipment that swings between the top and bottom of its range repeatedly can carry more thermal stress than its raw average suggests, and MKT is the calculation that captures that difference, weighting warmer excursions more heavily than the raw average would.

MKT is most useful for storage and long lanes with many small temperature swings, where a simple average would understate how much stress the product actually experienced during transit or in a warehouse. A warehouse with a temperature record that averages out to a fine-looking number can still carry a poor MKT if its swings were frequent and its warm spikes were sharp.

Pack-out and hold time

Pack-out is the specific combination of box, insulation, coolant type, coolant quantity and product placement used to build a shipment. Two shipments using an identical box are not using the same pack-out if the coolant amount or the product's position inside it differs, since either change alters how the box actually performs.

Hold time is how long that exact pack-out has been proven to keep its contents inside the required range under stated conditions, usually a defined ambient temperature. A pack-out with a nine-hour hold time is not qualified for a twelve-hour lane, regardless of how well it has performed on shorter routes in the past. Hold time is also usually stated for a specific ambient extreme, so the same pack-out can carry a different hold time in summer heat than it does in mild spring conditions.

Lane and qualification

A lane is a specific route: an origin, a destination, a transport mode, and every hub or handoff the shipment passes through along the way. Two shipments to the same city are not the same lane if one travels by road and the other includes an air leg with a customs hold, because the handling and the ambient exposure differ even though the endpoints match.

Qualification is the process of proving a given pack-out holds its range for a given lane's realistic worst case, usually through thermal validation testing before real product ever ships on it. A qualified lane is a lane with evidence behind it. An unqualified one is a lane running on assumption. A change to any part of the lane, a new carrier, a rerouted flight connection, a different time of year, is usually enough to require requalifying it rather than reusing the old evidence.
