Controlled Room Temperature (CRT) Shipping Explained

Controlled room temperature, CRT, is a defined shipping and storage band, most commonly written as 15 to 25°C, sometimes tightened to 20 to 25°C with brief excursions allowed up to 30°C. It is a temperature range like any other in cold chain, with the same qualification testing, the same monitoring, and the same excursion limits as a 2-8°C shipment. What makes it different is the absence of ice: no coolant pack, no dry ice, nothing that looks like refrigeration, which is exactly why people forget it counts as cold chain at all.

Most finished oral drugs, tablets and capsules, are labelled for CRT storage, because a solid dosage form formulated to survive ambient swings is far cheaper to make, store, and ship than one that needs active refrigeration. That single fact means CRT is not a niche band. It is the temperature range the largest share of pharmaceutical volume actually ships in, even though almost none of the public conversation about pharma cold chain mentions it.

No ice, same discipline

A CRT shipment usually travels in an insulated carton with no coolant inside it at all, just corrugate, foam, or a reflective liner slowing down how fast the inside of the box follows the outside air. That absence of ice is often read as meaning the shipment is not temperature sensitive, when the truth is closer to the opposite: the product is sensitive enough to need a defined band and a qualified pack-out, it just does not need active cooling to hold it.

The packaging still gets qualified the same way a refrigerated shipper does: tested in a thermal chamber against a stated ambient profile, with a stated pass duration, the same process any insulated shipper goes through for a colder band. The difference is the insulation works against a smaller gap, since ambient air and the target band usually sit close together, not the 20 or 30 degree difference a frozen or refrigerated shipment holds against.

Excursion limits and mean kinetic temperature

CRT ranges are not a hard wall at 15°C and 25°C. Pharmacopeial definitions typically allow brief excursions down to around 15°C and up to around 30°C, provided the mean kinetic temperature across the whole shipment, a weighted average that accounts for how much time was spent at each temperature, stays at or below 25°C. That is a deliberate design: short spikes in either direction are tolerated because most CRT-labelled product absorbs them without losing potency, as long as the overall exposure stays inside the calculated average.

That average is also where CRT shipments most often fail without anyone noticing at the time. A shipment that spends six hours at 32°C on a loading dock and the rest of its transit at 20°C can still fail its mean kinetic temperature limit even though no single reading looks dramatic on its own. Reading a CRT logger for a single peak misses this; the number that matters is the calculated average across the whole trip, not the worst single point.

Summer heat and winter cold, the same failure

CRT shipments are unusual in being vulnerable to both ends of the year in the same way. Summer heat is the obvious threat: a van left running in traffic, a parked delivery vehicle, or a loading dock in direct sun can push the inside of a lightly insulated box well past 30°C within an hour, faster than most people expect from a box that is not refrigerated.

Winter cold is just as real a threat, and far more often ignored, because a 15°C floor sits closer to normal outdoor cold than most other cold chain bands. An unheated cargo hold, an aircraft belly compartment, or a delivery van on a cold morning can sit well below 15°C without anyone doing anything wrong, simply because nothing in the chain is actively warming the product the way something would actively cool a frozen shipment. A CRT box built only to slow down heat gain, with no attention to cold, fails just as often from winter transport as from summer.

Oral solid dosage, and the honest limits

CRT is the default band for most tablets and capsules, along with many over-the-counter products, nutraceuticals, and diagnostic reagents formulated to be stable at ambient conditions. It sits alongside, not below, refrigerated and frozen bands in the same distribution network: a pharmaceutical wholesaler routinely carries 2-8°C, frozen, and CRT stock through the same warehouse and the same trucks, each held to its own qualified pack-out and its own monitoring.

It is the wrong choice, honestly, for anything that degrades outside a narrow window regardless of what the label says about ambient tolerance. Biologics, most vaccines, and insulin need real refrigeration and freeze protection that a CRT pack-out was never built to provide, and shipping them in CRT packaging because the product 'seems stable enough' is a qualification failure, not a shortcut. CRT also strains on long international lanes crossing sharp climate differences; a shipment moving from a temperate origin into desert heat or arctic cold may need a phase change material buffered pack-out rather than a bare insulated carton built for a milder swing.
