Cut flowers are a living, respiring product with a shelf life measured in days, not weeks. The floriculture cold chain moves stems from an equatorial farm through grading, packing, transport and auction or wholesale, all under continuous cold, so the flower reaches a customer with enough vase life left to be worth buying. Most cut flower species travel and store around 1-2°C. A handful of tropical varieties, orchids among them, need a warmer band and suffer chilling injury below it, so the chain is not one temperature but a small set of bands matched to species.
Respiration is the reason the chain exists. A cut stem keeps burning sugar and releasing heat and moisture after harvest, and every degree above its optimum band speeds that process up. Cold slows respiration, water loss and the flower's own production of ethylene, buying the days of vase life a florist or supermarket needs between harvest and sale.
Precooling within hours of cutting
Flowers are precooled at the farm, usually by forced-air cooling or hydrocooling, within a few hours of the stem being cut. The goal is to pull field heat out before the flower is boxed and palletised, because a warm stem sealed into a carton keeps generating heat inside a space with nowhere for it to go. A delay of even half a day between cutting and precooling shows up later as shortened vase life at the retail end, not as visible damage at the farm, which is what makes the step easy to skip and expensive to have skipped.
Ethylene: the flower's own enemy
Cut flowers are highly sensitive to ethylene, a gas that flowers, ripening fruit, engine exhaust and even other ageing flowers all give off. Exposure triggers wilting, petal drop and premature yellowing, and the effect is cumulative across a chain that mixes species and shipments in the same cold room or truck. Growers and handlers manage it by keeping ethylene sources away from flower storage, ventilating cold rooms, and treating sensitive species with an anti-ethylene compound before shipment. None of this is optional for high-value stems: a single badly ventilated staging area can cost an entire shipment days of vase life before it leaves the farm.
Air freight dominance and the shift toward sea
Most cut flowers move from equatorial growing regions to Northern Hemisphere markets by air, because air is the only mode fast enough to preserve vase life across long distances without heavy pretreatment. Air cargo cold chain handling for flowers looks much like handling for other perishables: tight tarmac time, a cold chain that has to survive transfer between aircraft, and very little tolerance for delay. Sea freight is growing as an alternative on the longest routes, using reefer containers set colder and run for longer than a typical produce voyage, combined with controlled-atmosphere packing and pretreatment to extend vase life well past what the flower would otherwise hold. Sea cuts freight cost sharply against a transit of two to three weeks instead of a one or two day flight, but it demands more from packing, pretreatment and the refrigerated trucking legs at both ends, since there is far less margin for error once the container door closes.
Vase life is the product being sold
A flower's real product is not the stem, it is the vase life remaining in it, the days a bought flower will look good in a customer's home. That number is invisible at every point in the chain except the last one. A shipment can look perfect on receiving and still have lost half its shelf life to a few hours at the wrong temperature days earlier, and the failure only becomes visible once the flower is on a table wilting ahead of schedule. That lag is what makes discipline at every link, precooling, storage, transport, auction handling, retail display, matter more than in a product where damage is visible on arrival.
The weakest links in the chain
The weakest points sit outside a dedicated reefer: a wholesale market floor without cold storage, a retail florist's un-refrigerated display bucket, or a delivery van with no temperature control for the last leg to a customer's door. None of these failures are catastrophic alone, a few hours in a warm room will not visibly wilt most flowers, but they are cumulative, and a stem that has already lost days of vase life to small failures earlier in the chain has no reserve left when the next one hits. Growers, exporters, freight forwarders, auction houses, wholesalers and retail florists all sit somewhere on this chain, and the discipline of the weakest link sets the vase life the end customer actually gets, regardless of how well the farm and the carrier did their part.
