Every portable unit is rated for a specific hold-over time: the number of hours it holds the 2 to 8°C band after power is lost or after an ice pack charge is used up, tested and stated by the manufacturer rather than estimated by the field team. That figure is the single most important spec for an outreach programme working in an area with unreliable power, since it sets how long a vaccination session can run before the stock needs to head back to a fixed store or a fresh charge. A unit rated for a few hours suits a single day's outreach close to base; one rated for several days suits a multi-day trip into an area with no power at all, and choosing the wrong rating for the trip is how stock gets wasted in the field rather than at the depot.

Programmes buying at scale specify equipment from that list rather than choosing on price or availability alone, since a unit that fails to hold range in the field costs more in wasted doses than it ever saved on the purchase price.
