Chilled ready meals distribution is the daily cycle that moves fully cooked, refrigerated meals from a production kitchen to a store shelf fast enough that a meaningful amount of shelf life is still left when a shopper buys one. Unlike frozen ready meals, which can sit in storage for months, a chilled meal is usually made to be sold and eaten within one to two weeks of production, some formats far sooner, so the distribution model has to run on a much tighter clock than most other packaged food.
The category exists because shoppers want the convenience of a frozen meal with the taste and texture of something cooked recently. That trade-off only works if the chain moves fast enough to keep most of the meal's short shelf life intact by the time it reaches a shelf, which is why chilled ready meal logistics looks more like fresh produce distribution than like ordinary grocery distribution.
Shelf life measured in days
A ready meal is cooked, not sterilised, so it still carries some surviving bacteria and is open to recontamination during cooling, packing and handling after cooking. Held cold, that bacterial load grows slowly enough for the meal to stay safe and appetising for a defined number of days, but nowhere near as long as a frozen or shelf-stable product, because cooking alone does not remove the moisture and nutrients bacteria need to grow once the product warms even slightly.
This is why chilled ready meals carry a use-by date measured in single or low double-digit days from production, rather than the months or years printed on frozen or ambient food. Every day of that short window that passes in a warehouse or on a truck is a day the shopper does not get to keep the meal in their own fridge before it needs to be eaten.
Daily replenishment
Because shelf life is so short, stores cannot hold weeks of chilled ready meal stock the way they would with frozen or ambient product. Depots ship to stores daily or close to it, by refrigerated road transport, in smaller batches matched to how fast each store actually sells the range, so a badly forecast delivery either leaves gaps on the shelf within a day or leaves unsold stock that runs out of shelf life before the next delivery arrives to replace it.
This daily rhythm puts far more pressure on forecasting and depot scheduling than most grocery categories carry, because there is no buffer stock sitting in a distribution centre to absorb a bad forecast. A single missed or late delivery run shows up on the shelf as an empty section the same day, not as a slow drift in stock levels over a week.
Holding the 0-5°C band
Chilled ready meals are typically held within 0-5°C, a narrower and colder band than general chilled grocery, because the combination of cooked food, moisture and a short intended shelf life leaves very little margin for error. A meal held even a couple of degrees warmer than its target for several hours during transit can lose a meaningful fraction of its already short remaining shelf life, in a way a hardier chilled product would barely notice.
Depots and trucks carrying this category typically run tighter monitoring than general chilled distribution, checking not just that the load arrived within range but how long it may have drifted out of range during loading, transit and unloading. That data matters more here than almost anywhere else in chilled retail, because the margin between a meal that is fine and one that has to be pulled from sale is measured in hours, not days.
Retail depot flows
Most chilled ready meal networks run on a hub-and-spoke model: a central kitchen produces the range, a regional depot receives it and consolidates it with other chilled goods, and store-bound trucks carry it the final leg. The regional depot is built for flow rather than storage, cross-docking product from inbound trailers to outbound store trucks within hours rather than holding it on shelves the way a cold store built for longer-life chilled or frozen goods would.
Minimising dwell time at the depot is as much a shelf-life decision as a temperature one. Every hour a meal spends waiting at a depot, even correctly chilled, is an hour it is not travelling toward the shelf, and given how few days of shelf life the product has to begin with, depot dwell time is tracked and trimmed with the same attention most categories reserve for the temperature reading itself.
Waste from a single day's delay
A single day's delay hits a chilled ready meal far harder than it would hit almost any other grocery category. A frozen meal delayed a day is unaffected; a chilled ready meal delayed a day has lost one of perhaps seven to fourteen days of total shelf life, often enough on its own to push the product past the point a retailer is willing to put it on a shelf at full price, if at all.
This is why chilled ready meal supply chains build in less slack than almost any other food category and treat missed transport windows as a live problem rather than a scheduling inconvenience. The category's convenience for the shopper is bought largely at the cost of a supply chain with very little room to absorb its own delays.
