A temperature-controlled airport facility is a cold room or chilled building located airside or close to the ramp, built to hold temperature-sensitive cargo during the window between a truck's arrival and the aircraft's departure, or the same window in reverse on arrival. It exists because the aircraft hold is not the weak point in air cargo cold chain. The ground either side of the flight is, and it is where most of the actual risk sits.
A shipment can spend more time sitting in one of these facilities, or waiting to reach one, than it spends in the air. A short domestic sector might last barely an hour while the ground handling either side of it stretches across half a day. The facility's job is to compress that waiting time and hold the product inside its range while it does, regardless of what the flight schedule says.
Airside cold rooms and dwell time
An airside facility sits close enough to the aircraft stand that cargo does not have to cross a long stretch of open tarmac to reach it. Dwell time, the period a shipment spends sitting rather than moving, is the main variable an airside room controls, since every extra hour outside a controlled space is an hour the packaging alone has to fight the ambient conditions, whatever the season.
Facilities further from the ramp, in a landside cargo terminal, need a longer covered transfer to reach the aircraft, adding dwell time back in even if the room itself is well built. A well-run airside facility is judged less on the size of the room and more on how few minutes a pallet actually spends inside a truck or on a trolley getting there.
Ramp exposure
The stretch of open tarmac between a facility and the aircraft is the point of highest risk at any airport: hot sun in summer, cold wind in winter, and no walls at all. Pallets waiting here are relying entirely on their own packaging, not the building, and a delay of even twenty minutes on an exposed stand can undo hours of careful handling further back in the chain.
Good ground handling minimises this stretch to minutes rather than an open-ended wait, and the best facilities are laid out specifically to keep the ramp crossing as short as physically possible, sometimes with a covered or insulated transfer vehicle used for nothing but that final short hop.
CEIV certified stations
IATA's CEIV Pharma certification is awarded to airports, handlers, and forwarders that meet a defined standard for handling temperature-sensitive cargo, covering facilities, procedures, training, and equipment. A CEIV certified station has been independently checked against that standard rather than simply claiming to meet it, which is a meaningfully different level of assurance than a station describing itself as pharma-capable with no external check behind the claim.
Certification does not remove the need to check a specific facility's own mapping and evidence. It is a strong signal that the underlying procedures exist, not a substitute for verifying the room the product will actually sit in, since a certified station can still have one poorly performing room alongside several good ones.
Handover between forwarder, handler, and airline
Three separate parties touch a shipment at an airport: the forwarder who booked the space, the ground handler who physically moves the cargo between truck, facility, and aircraft, and the airline that flies it. Each handover is both a physical transfer and a paperwork transfer, and each one needs to happen inside the facility's control, not out on the open ramp where nobody is timing it.
A shipment moving through air cargo cold chain routes depends on these three parties working from the same booking and the same expectations. A gap between any two of them is where a pallet ends up waiting in the wrong place, tracked by whatever temperature data logger is riding inside the insulated shipper rather than by anyone watching in real time, which is usually how a delay only becomes visible after the fact.
Security screening as a hidden dwell point
Cargo bound for a passenger aircraft usually has to clear a mandatory security screening step before it can be loaded, whether that is an X-ray scan, an explosive trace check, or a physical search. That step happens on a schedule set by security regulations, not by the cold chain, and a temperature-controlled facility rarely sits right next to the screening point.
Building the transfer to and from screening into the facility's own layout, rather than treating it as somebody else's problem down the corridor, is what keeps this mandatory step from turning into an unplanned hour of ambient exposure on top of everything else the shipment already has to get through.
